Mr John Brecknell is Head of the London Specialty School of Surgery and is responsible for the quality of training. Surgery has more than 1500 trainees, and offers programmes at prestigious teaching centres across the capital.
After appointment as a consultant neurosurgeon in Romford in 2006, Mr Brecknell was drawn into an interest in medical education. He is coming to the end of a four-year period running the MBBS final year at Barts & The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, is the head of the London Postgraduate School of Surgery and, having contributed to the construction of the 2017 core surgical curriculum, is the new chair of the JCST’s Core Surgical Training Advisory Committee.
Deputy Head of School
Mr Dominic Nielsen is the Deputy Head of the London Postgraduate School of Surgery. Mr Nielsen is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at St George’s Hospital in London. His clinical interests are foot and ankle surgery and complex lower limb trauma. He is a keen advocate of surgical education and is currently Training Programme Director for Higher Orthopaedics in South London and Deputy Head of Post Graduate School of Surgery in London.
