Q7 Does your organisation have a policy on gifts and can you describe its key points?
Think about times when patients have given you gifts and reflect on whether this has resulted in you treating them more favourably. Identify any examples where gifts have felt problematic for you.
There is professional advice on gifts (BMA 2007) as well as formal rules (GMC 2008). High value gifts are clearly problematic, but you may wish to consider how your workplace deals with lower level gifts. It is also worth considering whether the offered gift may contain a particular meaning for the giver, or if there may be an expectation of something in return.
