Further Notes and Information

Q12  Are there occasions where you feel there is no alternative but to agree to what the patient wants, even where you don’t see a clinical need?

If there are, does this apply with particular kinds of requests? Notice whether the feeling of having no alternative is associated with the way situation appears to you?

It can help if you imagine how the situation might appear to someone who was able to see alternatives: what would this look like, and how different would you feel? If you agree to something under pressure and then realise that it is not in the patient’s best interest it is important to acknowledge that you have made a mistake and to come back to the appropriate course of action.
