With some patients do you feel that you are an extra special doctor, or an especially poor doctor?
Seeing a doctor as imbued with special or unique powers, or as terrible can arise as part of a patients insecurity or as a part of a relationship where transference has become a key feature. Transference is where people bring past relationships to bear on the present (Hughes & Kerr, 2000). This is not a conscious process and is likely to arise in most relationships at some point. Look out for times when someone’s response seems to be out of step with the conversation.
