Further Notes and Information

Q6  Are you finding it difficult to not favour patients who share a similar background to you?

How often is this happening? Are there common themes? Have you noticed this getting increasingly problematic? Identify what the main concerns are for you.

People who share the background of the practitioner may bring expectations which are different from other patients and it may be harder to respond to them in a clinically appropriate way. Requests for particular kinds of help and invitations to social events may be more frequent, and the pressures may be harder to accommodate. Some clinicians have found ensuring that they have sufficient social opportunities makes it easier to deal with these requests. Being clear about the norms of the doctor-patient relationship in the dominant culture can also be useful.
